1.e4 e6 2.d3
beginning to set up the King's Indian Attack.

2...d5 3.Nd2 Nf6 4.Ngf3 b6
the other way to handle this opening is c7-c5.

5.e5
I seize the opportunity to establish a nice pawn chain, which would not have been possible with c7-c5.

5...Nfd7 6.d4 Be7 7.Bd3
When I got home and looked up the opening, I found that a better place for the B was b5. Then when Ba6, I can protect with a2-a4. When he exchanges, I'll have a P at b5 interfering with his Q-side development.

7...Ba6 8.Qe2 Bxd3 9.Qxd3
The Q inherits a nice diagonal from the B, but she has to watch for potential harrassment from a N on b4.

9...c5 10.c3
also keeps b4 protected, but only until Black exchanges pawns on d4.

10...Nc6 11.Nf1
With a nice P at e5, I want to transfer the N to g3 and use it for the coming attack.

11...Rc8
it might have been better to take the opportunity to play f7-f6 and pressure my center.

12.Qe2
I'm concerned about the possibility of f7-f6, so I interrupt my plan for the night to prevent the pawn push.

12...cxd4 13.cxd4 Nb4 14.Ne3
a change of plans for the N. It must defend c2, but once I kick the N on b4, it will be free again.

14...0-0 15.a3 Nc6 16.Ng4
I think the N ends up in a better spot than it would have from g3.

16...Re8
now I have to decide about the K. Don's K is now committed, there's no activity on the Q-side, the center is locked up with no prospect for dismantling it, and the R is on the perfect file if I can open it up. So I decide to store my K in the center.

17.h4 Nf8
I thought the B would go here, but this looks like a better defense.

18.Qd3
I keep moving this poor girl back and forth. With the two Ns blocking her on the diagonal, this gets her to an open diagonal that will hit h7 pretty good when the N finally gets to g5. And Ng5 will also clear the rank for the Q to get to the h-file.

18...h5
The bad news about this move is it prevents h4-h5 and pushes the N off a great post. The good news is that now I'm guaranteed to force open the g-file for my R.

19.Ne3
blocking the poor B for the 3rd time.

19...Ng6
fighting back and halting my plans for g2-g4.

20.g3
protecting against the double threat of Nxh4 and Nf4, but how am I going to open a file now?

20...Nf8?
apparently Don was preparing to play f7-f6, but this move let's me force the file open.

21.g4 hxg4 22.Nxg4
the N is back in business and the file is open. Life is good.

22...Nh7
fighting for g5, but weakening h7. Now when I bring my N to g5 it will create a mating threat.

23.Rg1
After the game, Imgrund the Fierce pointed out that this was a wasted move, as the R eventually went back to h1 anyway. But I liked the threat of 24.Nh6+ Kf8 25. Qxh7 and it's grim for Black.

23...Kh8
looks like he's trying to bring his R to b8 to aid in defense. [23...Bxh4 24.Nh6+ Kf8 25.Qxh7 gxh6 (25...Ke7 26.Nxf7 Qc7 27.Nxh4 ) 26.Qxh6+ Ke7 27.Nxh4 Kd7 28.Rg7+- ]

24.Ng5
I definitely need the h-file open now. Here's what I liked about Black's 22nd move. I have the double threat of mate on h7 and the Q fork on f7.

24...Nxg5
[24...Bxg5 25.hxg5 Nxg5 (25...Ne7 26.Rh1 g6 27.Nf6 ; 25...Kg8 26.g6 fxg6 27.Nh6+ Kf8 28.Qxg6 ) 26.Bxg5 Qxg5 27.Qh3+ Kg8 28.Nf6+ it's just amazing how many possibilities there are in a strong position.]

25.hxg5 Bxg5 26.Rh1+ Kg8
[26...Bh4 27.Nf6 gxf6 28.Rxh4+ Kg8 29.Bh6 Ne7 30.Rg4+ Ng6 31.Rxg6+ fxg6 32.Qxg6+ ]

27.Qh7+ Kf8 28.Qh8+ Ke7 29.Bxg5+ Kd7 30.Qxg7
[30.Bxd8 Rxh8 31.Rxh8 Nxd8 leaves me a R up and Q's off the board, but I still have a strong attack with the move I made. Why let up now?]

30...Re7
the best move I think [30...Qc7 31.Qxf7+ Ne7 (31...Re7 32.Nf6+ Kd8 33.Rh8+ Re8 34.Rxe8# ) 32.Nf6+ Kd8 (32...Kc6 33.Rc1+ ) 33.Qxe8# ; 30...Ne7 31.Nf6+ Kc7 32.Nxe8+ Qxe8 33.Bxe7 Qxe7 34.Rc1+ Kb7 35.Rxc8 Kxc8 36.Rh8+ Kd7 37.Qf8 and it just goes on and on...]

31.Bxe7 Qxe7 32.Qf6 Nxd4
[32...Qf8 33.Rh7 Nd8 (33...Ke8 34.Rh8 ) 34.Rh8 Qe7 35.Qxe7+ Kxe7 36.Kd2 ]

33.Qxe7+ Kxe7 34.Ne3
Now that the pressure's off and I'm a R up, I relax and get careless. Better was Rh3.

34...Nf3+ 35.Ke2 Nxe5 36.Rac1 Rd8 37.Rc7+ Rd7 38.Rxd7+ Kxd7
and White goes on to win the endgame. This was the best attack I've managed in a long time. 1-0
